PALS Coal Valley Staff Email Addresses
Please remember to use palsnet.info email addresses when
sending email to any staff at the PALS Coal Valley Service Center. The PALS
addresses have been in place for two years since PALS began. But, until recently,
if anyone used a staff member's former RBLS (Libby) email address, it was still
forwarded to the correct PALS address. As
of June 1, all email accounts
for PALS staff on Libby have now been deleted so forwarding no longer works.
All PALS staff emails can be found on the PALS website.
Delivery
Update
Just
a reminder that new PALS delivery codes went into effect on June 1, 2006. About
60 member library codes were changed for various reasons: because they made
more sense for the current name of the library, because the codes will also
be used in the PALSGroup database and need to sort properly, or because libraries
have changed delivery hubs. A complete list of the codes that have changed
is enclosed, or visit the delivery
area of the PALS website to print your own list of codes by hub or for
all libraries. Also, please note that the following libraries have changed
delivery hubs as of this week:
* the Ohio Public Library (OHBG), Tiskilwa Public Library
(TIBG)
and Raymond A. Sapp Memorial Library (Wyanet)(WYBG) are now
receiving delivery out of the Coal Valley hub (formerly Shorewood hub libraries)
* the Paw Paw Public Library (PWBY) is now receiving delivery
out of the Rockford hub (formerly a Shorewood hub library).
PALS plans to implement delivery route changes for the new fiscal year
beginning the week of July 10, 2006. This will include adding a new fourth,
Central Route in the Shorewood hub, and other minor adjustments as needed.
Contact a PALS delivery supervisor with questions or for more information:
Dorothy DeSalvo in Shorewood (dorothyd@palsnet.info or ext. 2701); Marie
Ehrhart or Marilyn Janssen in Rockford (mariee@palsnet.info or ext 4451
or marilynj@palsnet.info or ext 4470) or Brenda Roman in Coal Valley (brendar@palsnet.info or ext. 3152).

PALS Members - please remember that you are asked
to not request or release any items whether they are Free or For Sale until
Monday following the publication of the announcement in Prairie Views. This
gives library staff a chance to see the message and request the materials if
they are interested. Thanks for your cooperation - we have had several complaints

Literacy Library Group Calling for New Members
LEARN (Libraries' English
And Reading Network) is a cooperative organization of library and non-profit
literacy agencies and organizations that provide English as a second language
and adult basic skills training and support. A group of staff representing
these entities came together two years ago to share ideas about ways to provide
and market services, maintain a database of organizations that offer those
services, and investigate and publicize possible joint funding opportunities.
The group meets three times a year to share ideas. LEARN has a website (www.adultslearnenglish.org/)
where we maintain links to member organizations and other resource sites. Minutes
of the past meetings may also be viewed on the About Us page on the LEARN website.

the "Smartest Card";
Free Promotional Tools Now Online
Promotional tools in Spanish and English are available online
to promote The Smartest Card. Get It. Use It. @ your library theme for Library
Card Sign-up Month, which begins September 1. New this year are radio Public
Service Announcements (PSAs) featuring actor-comedian George Lopez, as well
as a summary of best practices from public libraries nationwide using the "Smartest
Card" theme. The radio PSAs can be downloaded and shared with local media.
Libraries also can download a print PSA featuring Lopez that can be customized

Libraries. Instructions on how to customize are posted online. Other tools
include "52 Ways to Use Your Library Card," a sample proclamation,
press release, op-ed, letter-to-the-editor, PSA scripts and "Smartest
Card" artwork. There also are links to "Smartest Card" promotional
items available from ALA Graphics. All materials are available at http://www.ala.org/librarycardsignup.
Libraries are encouraged to let the ALA Public Information Office know how
they are celebrating Library Card Sign-up Month. Send an email description
with contact information to: atyourlibrary@ala.org.
The strongest examples will be shared with the press as part of ALA’s
national media relations efforts. Observed the month of September since 1987,
Library Card Sign-up Month is a time when ALA and libraries across the country
remind parents that a library card is the most important school supply of all
- and this year - the smartest card a student can own. The Smartest Card. Get
It. Use It. @ your library is also the message of the Public Library Association’s
national advocacy campaign. For more information on PLA’s "Smartest
Card" initiative,

New at LibraryU: The Internet and Teens: Social Networking Safety
How many
times have you heard a young person talk about "blogging" or "myspace" and
wondered what language they were speaking? If you've ever been concerned about
the amount of time that your child spends on the Internet, or wondered what

House Appropriators Release Library Funding Levels
The House Labor, Health and
Human Services and Education Appropriations Subcommittee, which has jurisdiction
over several library programs, recommended funding levels for FY 2007. The Subcommittee's
recommendation included an overall funding level of $262,240,000 for the Institute
of Museum and Library Services, an increase of $15,096,000. For the Library Services
and Technology Act, the budget includes $220,855,000, an increase of $10,258,000
from FY 2006. Within that total is $171,500,000 for Grants to State Library Agencies,
which will enable the implementation of the new formula. Also included, $25,000,000
for Librarians for the 21st Century program, $12,930,000 for National Leadership
Grants for Libraries, and $3,675,000 for Improving Library Service to Native
Americans.
ALA, along with the 52 Members of Congress, had requested that the
House and Senate Labor, Health and Human Services and Education Appropriation
Subcommittees fund the Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA) at the President's
request of $220,855,000. For the Improving Literacy Through School Libraries
program, the Subcommittee recommended that the program be flat funded at $19.486
million, the same level as FY 2006. Reading First State Grants and Early Reading
First were both funded at FY 2006 levels. The President's Striving Readers Initiative
was funded at $35 million. The President had requested $100 million for this
program.
Some of the programs the President proposed for elimination in his FY
2006 budget were restored like Even Start, which was funded at $70 million. Also,
Title V funding, which has been severely cut over the last few years, received
$150 million, an increase of $51 million over FY 2006 and the President's FY
2007 request. The full House Appropriations Committee will consider the Subcommittee's
recommendations early next week. For more information, please visit ALA's website
at: http://www.ala.org/.

HB 4217 Still on Governor's Desk for His Signature
If you've not sent in an
e-mail or some communication: We need as many letters of support as possible
to show that this is important to libraries across the state. The bill merely
clarifies annexation language but is complicated and confusing. In an election
year, where this could be perceived as a tax increase, libraries need to be
vocal and send letters of support for the bill. http://www.ilga.gov/legislation/billstatus.asp?DocNum=4217&GAID=8&GA=94&DocTypeID=HB&LegID=22287&SessionID=50 If
you've not done so, please send a communication to the governor letting him
know that the bill helps Illinois libraries and urge that he sign the bill.
Send correspondence for Governor Blagojevich, to http://www.illinois.gov/gov/contactthegovernor.cfm or to the Office of the Governor, 207 State House, Springfield, IL 62706; (217)
782-0244 or (312) 814-2121 [TTY (888) 261-3336]. (NOTE: Should a response be
required it will be mailed to you via the United States Postal Service, so
it is important that you include your name and complete mailing address.)

Big Read Grants
Big
Read grants offered by National Endowment for the Arts NEA, in partnership
with the IMLS and Arts Midwest, is offering 100 grants throughout the country
to libraries and organizations for programs designed to revitalize the role
of literature in American popular culture and bring the power of literature
into the lives of its citizens. Application due dates are in September 2006
and April 2007.
Grants of
between $5000 to $20,000 will be made. There must be a one to one match with
non-federal funds but that includes in-kind (like staff time) as well as actual
dollars. Take a look and see whether this fits your community. School libraries
as well as public libraries and other organizations can apply.
