Added to the Collection at Rockford Service Center:

From Outreach to Equity: innovative models of library policy and practice ; Office for Literacy and Outreach Services, American Library Association.  Edited by Robin Osborne.  2004.  Despite the rather formal title, this book has some readable vignettes (models) about library service to some special populations which may strike a chord with a librarian looking for ways to broaden the ways his/her library can serve the local community.

Part 1-- Services Outside Library Walls includes descriptions about services to the elderly, immigrant, homeless, and incarcerated audiences as well as information about bookmobile service.
Part 2-- Outreach Inside the Library talks about programs and services such as assistive technology, family language kits, after school offerings, and community information and referral as well audiences like special needs children, teens, and immigrants.  One library tells about serving as a catalyst in bringing the community's literacy providers to the table in a way that eventually led to the community receiving at Lila Wallace-Reader's Digest grant to help with the literacy program.
Part 3-- Outreach Using Information Technology  talks about luring and connecting "people to the useful resources that enable libraries to change lives."  As might be expected, the models in this section include bridging the digital divide, organizing information on a website, and fostering information literacy as well as projects supporting the revitalization of indigenous native languages from Alaska to mainland North America to Hawaii.
In part 4-- Technical Services: Connecting Minds , the models include discussions subject access, multilingual materials, metadata, ILS migration, licensing, and on-line environments.
Part 5-- Advocacy and Outreach: a natural connection has some great examples about marketing and building support for programs, advocating for library service, providing cultural programming, reaching out to immigrant populations, and using demographic data.  Staff Development: assessing our own behaviors
Part 6-- has models that describe building outreach skills in staff and measuring outreach effectiveness.

Siva Vaidhyanathan Explores Google And The Future of Books
URBANA-CHAMPAIGN, IL--Siva Vaidhyanathan, Associate Professor of Culture and Communication at New York University, will be giving the fall 2006 Windsor Lecture at the Graduate School of Library and Information Science on October 12, 2006 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. The title of his talk is “What's an Author to Do?: Google, Digitization, and the Future of Books.”

This talk will explore the ways that large-scale digitization projects such as Google Book Search affect those who research and write books. It will examine the ways full-text searches might affect research, how widespread access to digitized books will alter market demands for authors, and how technological changes could alter the modes of composition and distribution of books in the near future. Critical of Google for its lack of quality control, Vaidhyanathan argues that the public debate (such as that between John Updike and Kevin Kelly) has been misguided and misplaced. The real questions for authors will be how we will gather and represent the raw materials for our work.

Vaidhyanathan, a cultural historian and media scholar, is the author of Copyrights and Copywrongs: The Rise of Intellectual Property and How it Threatens Creativity and The Anarchist in the Library: How the Clash between Freedom and Control is Hacking the Real World and Crashing the System . He has written for many periodicals, including American Scholar , The Chronicle of Higher Education , The New York Times Magazine , MSNBC.COM, Salon.com, openDemocracy.net, and The Nation . After five years as a professional journalist, Vaidhyanathan earned a Ph.D. in American Studies from the University of Texas at Austin. He has taught at Wesleyan University, the University of Wisconsin at Madison, Columbia University, and is currently an associate professor of Culture and Communication at New York University and a fellow at the New York Institute for the Humanities. He lives in Greenwich Village.

The Phineas L. Windsor Lectureship honors the career of Dr. Windsor, who was Director of the University of Illinois Library and the Library School from 1909 to 1940. Gifts from alumni and friends built the fund when Dr. Windsor retired. In 2004 Marian ('50 BA Science and Letters) and Arnold ('50 BS Architectural Studies) Thompson made a gift to this Fund. Marian is a Windsor granddaughter.

Art and Beauty in the Heartland

Jan Stilson's book, Art and Beauty in the Heartland, has been published and released for sale to libraries, bookstores and shops. It is the story of the artists at Eagle's Nest Camp on the Rock River at Oregon, IL from 1898-1942. The book is written for anyone who likes a good story from history, especially Illinois history. It tells of the friendships and working relationships of several Chicago artists and their families, such as Lorado Taft, sculptor, (from Elmwood, IL.) Charles Frances Browne and Oliver Dennitt Grover (from Earlville, IL.) landscape painters, Ralph Clarkson, portrait painter. and Hamlin Garland and Henry B. Fuller, writers. All these artists chose Chicago to launch their careers, and they chose the Rock River Valley for their recreational and summer work retreat. This book has over one hundred pictures, many of them donated to the author by family members of the artists. The families want America to read this story. It contains a description of the construction of the BlackHawk statue at Oregon, and the blueprints!!

Jan is willing to do book signings and writes: "the book is already beginning to sell online. Every library in the PALS system will benefit from high circ stats with this book. I have bookmarks to promote it. If interested, please let me know and I can forward them to you, or bring them with for the program. This book has an LC number, ISBN, and P-CIP for librarians' convenience. It may be ordered at discount through Ingram's or Baker and Taylor. The price directly from the online publisher is also discounted. Go to AuthorHouse.com/bookstore. Type: Stilson. Retail price of this book if I bring and sell it will be $24.95 due to me overhead. If you order from AuthorHouse the price for 8.5 x11 paperback is $19.95 or $3.95 for electronic download. I already have several book signings scheduled, so if you are interested, please don't put this off too long, as my calendar will fill up quickly. Thanks."
