Member News
Condolences
PALS members and staff offer their
sympathy to Rhonda Porter-McBride, director of the library at the Illinois
Veterans' Home in Manteno, whose mother passed away last week.
Closed
Robert W. Rowe Public Library will be closed November 9th
- 12th due to the installation of new carpeting. We will be unable to fill
holds during this time. They are sorry for the inconvenience.
Congratulations
to Mary Thomas of the Shorewood-Troy Public
Library District
on her recent retirement. Mary was director of the library since November 1989.
Prior to that time, she was Director of the Yorkville Public Library in Yorkville
for 17 years. Good Luck to Mary in her retirement.
to Sharon
Highler on her recent appointment to Director of the Shorewood-Troy
Public Library District. Sharon has served as Assistant Director of
the library since April 2006 and began her duties as Director on November 1,
2006. Prior to going to Shorewood-Troy, Sharon was employed at the Brookfield
Free PL in Brookfield since 1992. She was also a trustee for the Fountaindale
Public Library and the former Heritage Trail Library System. Good Luck to Sharon
in her new position.
Clinton Township Public Library Receives Help with PALSGroup Fees
The DeKalb
County Community Foundation has been a frequent supporter of PALS member libraries.
Their latest award was $2500 grant to help Clinton Township Public Library
pay the fees involved in becoming a fully partictipating member of PrairieCat.
Congratulations
to four PALS public libraries who just completed successful
referenda:
*
Earl Township Library created a library district to encompass most
of their school district covering LaSalle, DeKalb, and Lee Counties. The referendum
passed 557 yes to 218 no. The citizens of Freedom Twp., one of the "paper" libraries
in LaSalle County also voted on the question but it did not pass there. The
Freedom Twp. portion of the school district will not be a part of the new library
district.
* Malta Township Library increased their taxing rate from .14 to
.35 in a tax-capped county.
*
Reddick Public Library in Ottawa created a library
district to encompass their high school district. The referendum passed 5,457
yes to 2,101 no.
*
Somonauk Public Library District passed a referendum (1,639
yes to 1,384 no) to build a new library.
The even better news is that 10 out
of the last 10 PALS public library referenda have passed. Keep up the great
work everyone!
Kudos!
The National Council for Marketing and Public Relations (NCMPR) has awarded
Joliet Junior College the bronze medallion award for the JJC Library Website.

Diversity: Continuing the Conversation
Lincoln Trail Libraries System is delighted
to announce that we have received funding for the Diversity Initiative for
the third year in a row! The success we encountered can be directly attributed
to your continuous support and active participation as we planned and organized
events. Special thanks go to the three Systems we partnered with in 2005/06--Lewis
and Clark, Rolling Prairie, and Shawnee—who were instrumental in helping
us achieve the goals and objectives of the project. To further expand this
project, the diversity initiative will encompass the whole state of Illinois
this year.
Diversity Forum: LTLS will organize and facilitate a statewide forum
that focuses on library services for multicultural and diverse populations.
Attendees will be encouraged to bring a community partner they are already
collaborating with on multi-cultural issues, or a partner they would like to
work with.
Programming Funds: After attending the forum, libraries and their
partners will be able to seek funding for a collaborative program or project
that helps build community bridges and promote diversity. Projects will go
through a formal application process and will be reviewed on the basis of providing
multi-cultural awareness via different avenues.
You can also check our diversity
Web site at www.librarydiversity.info and start sharing your ideas on the discussion
board or send us a diversity story to post. Donna Schaal and Amani Fouad Ayad
will continue to work with you and answer any questions. You can reach Amani
at aayad@lincolntrail.info (217) 352-0047 ext. 228 and Donna at dschaal@lincolntrail.info (217) 352-0047 ext. 204. Thanks again, and we look forward to a year full of
learning, thought, wonder and fun!

Legislative/Advocacy News
Notes of Congratulation on Election
If you've not yet had a chance to do so,
please be sure to send a note of congratulations to your elected legislators
to congratulate them on their election. Just a brief handwritten note, preferably
on your library stationary, will do the job. If the legislator has been re-elected
and was in office before, be sure to add a thank you note for his past support
of libraries, invite him to stop by at the library and offer to give a tour
and show all the many services that you offer to make the community in his
district a more desirable place to live. If you don't have the district office
address, you can find this on the advocacy section on ILA's web site, http://www.ila.org/advocacy/index.htm or
just send an e-mail to Inara McGroarty at inaram@palsnet.info
With online predator stories
hitting the press, getting airtime on TV shows and library confidentially stories
getting increased attention, it's a good time to get to know your legislators
and have them recognize your name and your library. We may well need them to
understand the issues better before they are back in session this spring.
