READ Software Group Purchase
PALS is coordinating
a group purchase of ALA READ software disk 1, ALA READ software disk 2, and
Photoshop Elements 5. The READ disks contain files to create custom READ posters
with your own photos. Many of the files can be used with Microsoft Publisher
or Microsoft Word, but some of the more involved files require Photoshop Elements
to create posters. READ 1 and READ 2 contain different files and can be ordered
separately. An overview of the files on the disks is available at http://www.alastore.ala.org/img/641.pdf.
The cost for each READ 1 or READ 2 will depend on the quantity of the group
purchase, but should not exceed $60, which includes postage. Your library will
receive an invoice from PALS. Photoshop Elements 5 is a graphics program that
gives you additional options for working with graphics. You can use Elements
to edit your photos or create publications, as well as create READ posters.
Information about Elements is available at http://www.adobe.com/products/photoshopelwin/overview2.html.
The cost of Elements is $96.99, which includes shipping. Your library will
receive an invoice from PALS.
If you would like to order READ 1, READ 2, or
Photoshop Elements, please fill out the form at http://www.palsnet.info/members/purchase/.
To help us maintain accurate records, no orders will be accepted without a
completed order form. The deadline for ordering is June 30, 2007. For more
information on the READ software, contact Rhonda Krahl at rhondak@palsnet.info or ext. 3151. For more information on Photoshop Elements, contact Kacy Kelly
at kacyk@palsnet.info or ext. 3251.

again, please see Technical Bulletin 24 on the PALSGroup secure site or contact
Brian Smith (brians@palsnet.info).

E-Rate Corner
We are continuing our discussion of
the SLC BEAR Form. So far we discussed page four and where to fax this page
to be signed by the various phone companies. We discussed how it should be
filed as soon after June 30 as possible as this date is the end of the fiscal
cycle for SLC. A new feature for filing the BEAR form is online submission
and certification. Most libraries received a special PIN from SLC in order
to certify their BEAR forms online. Your regular PIN can also be used to certify
an online BEAR form. This is the second year for this type of BEAR filing and
SLC has indicated that they will soon require online filing and will do away
with the paper certification. So this might be a good time to try to do the
form online. Next week we will continue plodding through the maze of the BEAR,
tie up some loose ends from the BEAR, and begin a new topic. Till then, send
your E-Rate question to: marilynj@palsnet.info or
call Marilyn at PALS Rockford, 815-229-4470, or ext 4470.

New Award to Honor Librarian for Promoting
Baseball and Literacy or Library Services
Winner to receive trip to 2008 Baseball Hall of Fame Game
Applications
are available for “Batting for literacy @ your library,” a new
award in conjunction with the Step Up to the Plate @ your library program.
The award will honor an individual librarian who has used baseball to enhance
literacy or library service. The recipient will be awarded a trip to the 2008
Baseball Hall of Fame Game, an annual exhibition game between two major league
teams at the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum in Cooperstown, N.Y.
The trip will include a behind-the-scenes tour of the library and museum. Applications
and guidelines are available at www.ala.org/baseballaward. Librarians can nominate
a colleague or themselves. Submissions should include a one-page description
of how the nominee has used baseball to enhance literacy or library service
and must be accompanied by examples of baseball-related programming, publicity
for programming or other supporting materials. Applicants are encouraged to
send examples of how the nominee promoted the Step Up to the Plate @ your library
program. All applications must be received by September 1, 2007. Nominees must
be ALA members in order to be eligible. Step Up to the Plate @ your library,
developed by ALA and the Baseball Hall of Fame, encourages kids between 9-18
years of age to go to their library, check out a baseball book and write about
how a character inspired them. The program runs through September 1, 2007.
More information and free tools to help librarians promote the program locally
are available at www.ala.org/baseball. The Baseball Hall of Fame is a Founding
Partner in The Campaign for America's Libraries.
