PALS will host an "All PALS" meeting on
Tuesday, November 6, 2007, available by videoconference at all eight neighborhood
locations. This meeting will be an update on various topics/projects by PALS
staff and an opportunity for neighborhood networking. Watch for more details
in a few weeks.
Bus Ride to ILA Exhibits
PALS is once again proposing to offer
a bus ride from each of the Service Centers to ILA Exhibits at the 2007 Conference
in Springfield. Because of a change in the ILA Exhibits schedule, the ride
is being offered on Wednesday, October 10th with arrival planned in time for
the Opening Lunch Reception at 12:30 PM and the bus will leave for the return
trip at 5 PM. The cost of the ride is $30. Besides the Service Centers, pickups
may be offered at Rochelle, Peru, and Dwight.
We ask you to please register
in http://palsnet.info/events as soon
as possible. Because of the financial commitment involved in using a bus, we
will need at least 20 riders per point of origin registered by September 5th.
If we do not meet that goal then we will endeavor to arrange an alternative
ride for registrants.
Questions about the rides should be addressed to Nancy
Smith at nancys@palsnet.info or x4466.
It is the practice of the PALS business
office to invoice the member library for the ride after the event.
If you need
other financial arrangements made, please notify Debbie Fowler at debbief@palsnet.info.

PALS Board Seeks Public Library Trustee for One-Year Appointment
The Prairie
Area Library System Board of Directors continues to seek a public library trustee
from an Illinois member library to fill a vacant seat. The PALS Board meets
monthly at least nine times a year on the third Tuesday of the month. Meeting
locations vary from month to month. Approved expenses associated with travel
to meetings will be reimbursed by the system.
The appointment will run through
June 30, 2008. Interested parties should contact Board President Penny O’Rourke
at pennyo@byron.lib.il.us.
More information on the responsibilities of the board and its members can be
found on the PALS website at http://www.palsnet.info/about/board/default.asp.
PALS Communications Survey Now Open!
In FY2008, PALS staff wants
to work on improving communications to our member libraries. We hope to implement
a new website and a new design/platform for our newsletter, Prairie Views.
We are also investigating expanding our use of Blogs/ RSS news feeds, Wikis,
podcasting and more. Before we do that, we'd like to gather your input on current
PALS communications tools and where you think we should move in the future.
To that end, we invite you to participate in a survey about PALS and communication
with our members. Click here to
take the survey. The survey will be open until August 15, so please tell your
colleagues! Everyone is welcome and encouraged to participate.
PALS Seeking Sublessee for Rockford
Facility
Those who work at or visit the PALS Rockford Service Center
know that we have more square footage in that facility then we actually need,
but also ten years left on our lease for that space. We have recently put a
sign out in front of the building to let potential sublessees know that we
would be willing to sub-lease space. However, we want to assure members in
the Rockford area that we have no plans to stop having office/meeting/workshop
space in Rockford. We simply are hoping to reduce some of our operating expenses
if we can sub-lease some of the extra space.
Union
Listing Users Group (ULUG) Initial Meetings
If
you missed the July 26th meeting, Union Listing(UL) Members of PrairieCat are
urged to attend an informational and organizational session live
at the Rockford
Service Center on Wednesday, August 15th, from 9:30
to 11:30 AM. (also available at Coal Valley via videoconferencing). PALS staff
will discuss the services, privileges and responsibilities that accompany UL
PrairieCat membership as well as the financial commitment. There will be the
opportunity to meet PALSGroup staff who will be present, and answer some questions,
on the operational and procedural aspects of Union Listing. This will also
be the opportunity to nominate ULUG representatives who will attend PALSGroup
meetings in an advisory capacity and serve as liaison between the two groups.
Please register on CLeO
for the event.

Jumpstart’s
Read for the Record
Last August, more than 150,000 children read the same book
with an adult on the same day to support early literacy and set a world record.
The goal of Jumpstart’s Read for the Record campaign is to raise public
awareness about significant disparities in early education. This year, Jumpstart
is partnering with ALA’s Association for Library Service to Children
(ALSC) to expand the reach of this award-winning campaign. Jumpstart and ALSC
invite you to share The Story of Ferdinand with children in your communities
on September 20, 2007 and be a part of a nationwide movement connecting children
and adults in the shared learning experiences all children need to be successful
in school and in life! Jumpstart has created tools on the campaign website’s
Events Page to help librarians, educators and parents find or create events
in their community. With the Event Finder/Builder, you can create and advertise
your events so families can search for and attend events on September 20. The

Congressman Manzullo to Meet With Librarians in the 16th Congressional District
An informal meet & greet with Congressman Donald Manzullo
will be held on Tuesday, August 21, 9 to 10 am at the Cherry Valley PLD. Attendance
is especially requested of those who’ve received LSTA grants in the last
years. Please use this opportunity to thank the congressman for supporting
LSTA funding and mention how not only your library benefited from the grant,
but how it also added to making your community a better place to live. Those
who’ve not received
LSTA grants but wish they had, should take advantage of this opportunity to
request increased LSTA funding. This has been on the top three list of issues
every year at ALA’s National Legislative Day. Here’s an opportunity
to mention the need without incurring the cost of a flight to DC and “bargain” room
rates of $200+ for each night’s lodging in DC and needing to miss several
busy days out of your library. Bring along your business cards, library promotional
material and any brochures that you have on events at your library.
Please
register on CLEO.
Following the meet & greet, you’re invited to stay
for the PALS board meeting at the same location. I look forward to seeing many
of you and making the strong impression that the 16th district has many libraries
and that we need to be listened to! For questions please contact inaram@palsnet.info

Grant News
SLA Research
Grant
The
Special Libraries Association (SLA) has pooled its research funds and now is
offering a new SLA Research Grant incorporating the Steven I. Goldspiel Memorial
Research Grant Fund. SLA supports two types of proposals. Firstly research
projects focused on the needs and concerns of information professionals in
special libraries and related venues, with its current focus being on evidence-based
practice, as in the Special Libraries Association (SLA) Research Statement, "Putting
Our Knowledge to Work" (www.sla.org/researchstatement). Awards may be
granted up to $25,000. Secondly projects which directly benefit the operations
of SLA and its units, by furthering the scientific, literary and educational
purpose for which the association is organized and operated. Awards may be
granted up to $10,000. Deadline for applications: Oct. 29, 2007. More information

ALSC and Candlewick Press "Light the Way" with
$5,000 grant
ALA, CHICAGO
- The Association for Library Service to Children (ALSC), a division of the
American Library Association (ALA), and Candlewick Press are pleased to announce “Light
the Way: Outreach to the Underserved,” a one-time grant of $5,000 for
a library conducting exemplary outreach to underserved populations. The grant
will be presented in honor of Newbery Medalist and Geisel Honoree Kate DiCamillo. “When
I was a child from a broken home in search of comfort, librarians handed me
a book.” said DiCamillo. “I am proud to join with ALSC today in
this ongoing effort to put books into the hands of children who need the books—the
light—the most.”
The ALSC Library Service to Special Population
Children and Their Caregivers Committee (LSSPCC) will select the winner and
may name up to three Honorable Mentions. Special population children may include
those who have learning or physical differences, speak English as a second
language, are in a non-traditional school environment or a non-traditional
family setting (such as teen parents, foster children, children in the juvenile
justice system and children in gay and lesbian families) and those who need
accommodation service to meet their needs. “With the ‘Light the
Way’ grant, Kate DiCamillo and Candlewick Press serve as shining examples
of an author and publisher who can make a measurable difference to underserved
populations,” says ALSC President Jane B. Marino, director of the Bronxville
(N.Y.) Public Library. “This grant provides ALSC with a unique opportunity
to honor and support libraries who are doing exceptional work to reach out
to such groups. We are honored to work with them through the Library Service
to Special Population Children and Their Caregivers Committee.”
Criteria
and an application for the grant are available now on the ALSC
Web site. The winner and Honorable Mentions will be announced
at ALA’s Midwinter Meeting in Philadelphia, January 11-16, 2008. For
more information on ALSC or the “Light the Way” grant, please contact
Diane Foote at 312-280-2162 or dfoote@ala.org.
