PALS Communications Survey Extended to September 1
The PALS Communications
Survey will remain open until September 1 to give member school librarians
(and anyone else) a chance to complete the survey if interested. Visit http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.aspx?sm=TGrdBvLqTxAsCkZ4lUKLWg_3d_3d to complete the survey.
Save the Date!
PALS will host an "All PALS" meeting on
Tuesday, November 6, 2007, available by videoconference at all eight neighborhood
locations. This meeting will be an update on various topics/projects by PALS
staff and an opportunity for neighborhood networking. Watch for more details
in a few weeks.
Bus Ride to ILA Exhibits
PALS is once again proposing to offer
a bus ride from each of the Service Centers to ILA Exhibits at the 2007 Conference
in Springfield. Because of a change in the ILA Exhibits schedule, the ride
is being offered on Wednesday, October 10th with arrival planned in time for
the Opening Lunch Reception at 12:30 PM and the bus will leave for the return
trip at 5 PM. The cost of the ride is $30. Besides the Service Centers, pickups
may be offered at Rochelle, Peru, and Dwight.
We ask you to please register
in http://palsnet.info/events as soon
as possible. Because of the financial commitment involved in using a bus, we
will need at least 20 riders per point of origin registered by September 5th.
If we do not meet that goal then we will endeavor to arrange an alternative
ride for registrants.
Questions about the rides should be addressed to Nancy
Smith at nancys@palsnet.info or x4466.
It is the practice of the PALS business
office to invoice the member library for the ride after the event.
If you need
other financial arrangements made, please notify Debbie Fowler at debbief@palsnet.info.
PALS Offers Group Purchase of USB Headset with Microphone
PALS has organized
another group purchase for a USB headset with microphone. This Plantronics

and workshops, and, of course, you can use it for many other things as well.
Please do note that your PC must have a USB port in order to use it. Our price
on this unit is $37.00 per headset with a flat $7.99 per order shipping charge
for up to five headsets. If you would like to order more than 5 headsets, please
contact Kacy Kelly for shipping charges. If you are interested in ordering,
please contact Kacy Kelly at kacyk@palsnet.info and
include the following information: Library Name and Delivery Address (i.e.

42 Locations in U.S. and Canada Set
to Screen New Librarian Documentary; Deadline Extended
MADISON, WI – The producers of the new documentary,
The Hollywood Librarian: A Look at Librarians Through Film, announced
that the list of screening locations for the film during Banned Books Week
(September 29 through October 6) now numbers 42 across the North American continent.
The film will be shown from Saratoga Springs, New York to Anchorage, Alaska,
with Canada libraries in Winnipeg and Quebec also participating. Memphis, Tennessee,
Ketchum, Idaho and Las Cruces, New Mexico are among the locations where libraries
will host the film with everything from red carpet entrances to lunchtime brown
bag discussions. The full list (available as a Google Map on the home page
at http://www.hollywoodlibrarian.com, “Where to See the Film”)
comprises 64 screenings in 19 states, plus the two Canadian locations. The
96-minute documentary is the first look at the real work and skills of the
more than 60,000 librarians working in the U.S. The film provides a glimpse
into this well-loved but little understood profession and will leave audiences
with a new appreciation for a group of people who have been called “democracy’s
heroes.” The August 15 deadline to fax a signed Screening Agreement has
passed, but due to numerous requests the deadline has been extended until August
24 at 5 p.m. Pacific time. Screening Agreements are available at the film’s
website at http://www.hollywoodlibrarian.com.
Free Radio Public Service Announcements
Now Available for Library Card Sign–up
Month in September
CHICAGO – The American Library Association (ALA) announces
the release of five new radio public service announcements (PSAs) that are
now available to help libraries promote Library Card Sign-up Month in September
and the library card as the “smartest card in your wallet.” The
PSAs can be downloaded for free at www.ala.org/librarycardsignup and are available
in 10, 15 and 30-second MP3 formats. Libraries are encouraged to share the
PSAs with local radio stations. Other free tools include sample press materials,
a list of “52 Ways to Use Your Library Card” and “Smartest
Card” logos. Press materials and “Smartest Card” logos are
available in both English and Spanish. Examples from libraries that have used
giant “Smartest Cards” in photo opportunities also appear on the
Web page. Libraries are encouraged to let the ALA Public Information Office
know how they are celebrating Library Card Sign-up Month. Visit www.ala.org/librarycardsignup
and click on “Share your story.” The strongest examples will be
shared with the press as part of ALA’s national media relations efforts.
Observed in the month of September since 1987, Library Card Sign-up Month is
a time when ALA and libraries across the county remind parents and kids that
a library card is the most important school supply of all.

Legislative/Advocacy News
Successful LSTA Advocacy Event
On August 21st, librarians and trustees from
the 16th congressional district met with Congressman Don Manzullo to thank
him for his support of libraries and LSTA funding. As the congressman moved
around the room to greet the attendees, he heard stories of what the grants
accomplished at individual libraries. Perhaps the most dramatic example of
the day was given by John Royalty, trustee at Kirkland PL, of how a grant of
just $500 made a difference in the community. The “Remembering When” grant
generated so much interest that it’s resulting in the formation of a
Historical Society in Kirkland. Truly a success story!
Among the other examples
cited by the participants were the collections that were acquired because of
various grants: Preparedness, Response and Recovery Plan Programs; Ready With
R’s;
Demonstration of Library Service for Unserved Areas; Keep, Toss, Donate or
Sell– Cleaning House; Building a Healthier Bridge; To Your Health; Philosophy
and Psychology in the Library; Changing Resources for Changing Times; Active
Alert Seniors; Computer Training and the Library; Meandering the Midwest; Fundraising
101; It’s Not the Plan – It’s the Planning; Kreative Kids;
Timeless Treasures of the Past: Learning For the Future; An Once of Prevention;
La Biblioteca Es Para Usted; Space Crunch; Health Matters; Bilingual Book Bag;
Science Health and Technology Update.
After the congressman’s remarks,
Jane Lenser of PALS was able to speak of her grant on Keeping the Door Open
for Tweens and Teens which was a direct tie in to the congressman’s observation
that children are eager listeners and enjoy stories but then seem to lose interest
in reading as they’re drawn into technology. Eve Kirk, Cherry Valley
PLD, and hostess for the event, told of meeting the congressman’s brother
one day when her car stalled. Not only did he help her, but after learning
that she’s a librarian, he remembered her and donated boxes of books
when cleaning out the house after his father’s death. One of the books
turned out to be an autographed copy of Ronald Reagan’s autobiography.
Congressman Manzullo remarked that the book should be held on to and not sold
on E-Bay. The book would not have left the Manzullo household had he seen it
first!
As the congressman left, he made sure to take along copies of the listing
of LSTA grants in his district as well as the letters sent by those who couldn’t
attend the program in person. I expect that his appreciation of what these
grants can accomplish was significantly increased. A very successful advocacy
effort on behalf of LSTA grants as well as a nice gesture of appreciation for
the congressman’s support in the past.
