PALS
Offering Rides to Public Library Association, SirsiDynix Super Conference
PLA: March 25-29, 2008 is the Public Library Association’s
(PLA) 12th biennial conference at Minneapolis (http://www.placonference.org)
Offering more than 200 programs in 8 tracks, this conference features many
nationally known speakers including collection development guru Nancy Pearl,
John Wood (formerly of Microsoft and founder of Room to Read) and actor/comedian
Kevin Nealon. It’s a great opportunity to learn what’s going on
in the library world nationally and to network with public library folks from
across the country. This year PALS staff is driving to Minneapolis and there
are seats for up to 10 members to ride along. (http://www.palsnet.info/events See
March 25th calendar.)
The 200 programs cover the whole range of library issues
from adult service to marketing to technology presented by librarians and library
consultants with expertise and experience. They cover the day to day issues
like “Successful
Programming When You Have a Million Things to Do,” “So What? Using
Outcome Measures…,” “Library Conflict Management,” and “21st
Century Library Design.” Some of the more intriguing titles are “Sexy
Senior Programming at Your Library,” “Reinventing the Library,” “Marketing
without Money,” and “Think Outside the Book.” You can find
the preliminary program at http://www.placonference.org/pdf/pla2008preliminary.
Folks who’ve attended PLA are strong advocates that this offers a great
opportunity for library directors and/or staff to be exposed to a broad range
of public library oriented information and trends. This conference tends to
be held nearer the coasts and this offering a Minneapolis is a rare opportunity
to attend at a “nearby” Midwestern site. Registration and lodging
information can be found at the conference site listed above. Early bird registration
is in place until January 18th. Questions about the ride can be directed to
Nancy Smith (nancys@palsnet.info, x4466) or Sandy Ringstrom (sandyr@palsnet.info,
x2710).
SirsiDynix SuperConference: April 5-8, 2008 is the annual
user conference of SirsiDynix Unicorn users in Detroit, Michigan. The SirsiDynix
Institute's Executive Conference will be held concurrently on April 5-6. Registration
is now open at: http://www.superconference.info/ Early
bird registration is open through January 2008. PALS staff will be attending
the conference and are offering rides to any interested members. Please contact
Paul Mills (paulm@palsnet.info or x2715), Len Lindquist (lenl@palsnet.info or x4472), Brian Smith (brians@palsnet.info or x2704) or Judy Hutchinson (judyh@palsnet.info or x3150) if you have questions about riding. Registration for the ride will
be up in CLeO shortly.

Library
of Congress Places 3,000 Photos on Flickr
(ALA, Washington)
The Library of Congress announced
January 16 that it has teamed with the photo-sharing website Flickr to broaden
public access to the 14 million photographs and other visual items in LC’s
collections. The pilot project is beginning with 3,000 photos from two of the
library’s most popular collections—the George Grantham Bain Collection,
featuring the photographic files of one of America's earliest news picture
agencies, and Farm Security Administration/Office of War Information photos
of rural and farm life and World War II mobilization taken between 1939 and
1944—that have been placed in an area of Flickr designated as The Commons.
The project includes only images for which no copyright restrictions are known
to exist.
The library also hopes to use the public to enhance the collection’s
utility. As LC Director of Communications Matt Raymond said on the library’s
blog, “The real magic comes when the power of the Flickr community takes
over. We want people to tag, comment, and make notes on the images, just like
any other Flickr photo, which will benefit not only the community but also
the collections themselves. For instance, many photos are missing key caption
information such as where the photo was taken and who is pictured. If such
information is collected via Flickr members, it can potentially enhance the
quality of the bibliographic records for the images.”

Libraries in Name Only Bill Introduced
On Thursday, January 17th, Rep.
Frank Mautino (D-76, Spring Valley) filed House Bill (HB) 4518 (Libraries in
Name Only) on the dissolution of township libraries that fail to meet certain
benchmarks. This is an issue that had received extensive discussion in the
ILA Public Policy Committee because of recent development regarding four township
referenda (Fall River Township, Farm Ridge Township, Freedom Township, and
Wallace Township in LaSalle County) where library districts have been created
without clear intention of providing library service. This action has confused
library service in this area and could have greater implications across the
state. The full text is here.
Mautino is doing some due diligence with townships back in the district. He
is a great supporter of the library community and will continue working on
this bill with the library community. Unless he gets a lot of heat from his
townships, Kip Kolkmeier, ILA lobbyist, is fairly optimistic about moving this
bill.
Bill Introduced
to Increase State Grants for Public and School Libraries.
Rep. Lou Lang (D-16,
Skokie) filed House Bill (HB) 4527. This legislation would increase state grants
for public libraries and school libraries. The full text is here.
These new bills are now on the Illinois
Library Association web site.

Museums, Libraries, and Archives Urged to Apply for Free IMLS Connecting to Collections
Bookshelf
Deadline extended to April 30, 2008
(ALA,
WASHINGTON, DC) --The Institute of
Museum and Library Services (IMLS), in cooperation with the American Association
for State and Local History (AASLH), has extended the deadline for applying for
the IMLS Connecting to Collections Bookshelf, a core set of books, online resources,
and a user’s guide that are essential for the care of collections. The
bookshelf has received support from the Getty Foundation, the Henry Luce Foundation,
and the Samuel H. Kress Foundation. A simple electronic application for the free
IMLS Bookshelf is available at www.aaslh.org/Bookshelf. The IMLS Bookshelf focuses
on collections typically found in art or history museums and in libraries' special
collections, with an added selection of texts for zoos, aquaria, public gardens,
and nature centers. It addresses such topics as the philosophy and ethics of
collecting, collections management and planning, emergency preparedness, and
culturally specific conservation issues. Recipients of the Bookshelf will also
receive a guide with answers to common questions about collections care that
can be answered by the Bookshelf. A guide to online resources on collections
care has also been prepared by Heritage Preservation (HP), a national non-profit
organization working to preserve America’s collective heritage. Both documents
are available online on the IMLS Web Site at www.imls.gov/collections. Two panels
of experts, convened by HP, made recommendations to IMLS on the contents of the
bookshelf. Among the publications selected were The National Trust Manual of
Housekeeping (published by the British National Trust in 2005), the Field Guide
to Emergency Response (published by Heritage Preservation in 2006), and Essentials
of Conservation Biology (published by Primack in 2006).
The IMLS Bookshelf will
be awarded free in this last application period March 1 – April 30, 2008,
with recipients announced in July 2008. Instructions, qualifications, and the
content of the IMLS Bookshelf, along with the online application, can be found
at www.aaslh.org/Bookshelf. Priority will be given to smaller institutions, but
large museums and libraries with special collections are also eligible to apply.
Federally operated institutions, for-profit institutions, and libraries that
do not hold special collections are not eligible to receive the Bookshelf. For
more information on the IMLS Bookshelf, email Terry Jackson at jackson@aaslh.org,
or call 615-320-3203.
The Bookshelf is part of Connecting to Collections: A Call
to Action, a multi-year initiative to help improve the care of our nation’s
collections. IMLS began the initiative in response to A Public Trust at Risk:
The Heritage Health Index Report on the State of America’s Collections,
a 2005 Heritage Preservation study supported by IMLS, which documented the dire
state of the nation’s collections. See www.imls.gov/collections for more
information.
