PALS
Offering Rides to Public Library Association, SirsiDynix Super Conference
PLA: March 25-29, 2008 is the Public Library Association’s
(PLA) 12th biennial conference at Minneapolis (http://www.placonference.org)
Offering more than 200 programs in 8 tracks, this conference features many
nationally known speakers including collection development guru Nancy Pearl,
John Wood (formerly of Microsoft and founder of Room to Read) and actor/comedian
Kevin Nealon. It’s a great opportunity to learn what’s going on
in the library world nationally and to network with public library folks from
across the country. This year PALS staff is driving to Minneapolis and there
are seats for up to 10 members to ride along. (http://www.palsnet.info/events See
March 25th calendar.)
The 200 programs cover the whole range of library issues
from adult service to marketing to technology presented by librarians and library
consultants with expertise and experience. They cover the day to day issues
like “Successful
Programming When You Have a Million Things to Do,” “So What? Using
Outcome Measures…,” “Library Conflict Management,” and “21st
Century Library Design.” Some of the more intriguing titles are “Sexy
Senior Programming at Your Library,” “Reinventing the Library,” “Marketing
without Money,” and “Think Outside the Book.” You can find
the preliminary program at http://www.placonference.org/pdf/pla2008preliminary.
Folks who’ve attended PLA are strong advocates that this offers a great
opportunity for library directors and/or staff to be exposed to a broad range
of public library oriented information and trends. This conference tends to
be held nearer the coasts and this offering a Minneapolis is a rare opportunity
to attend at a “nearby” Midwestern site. Registration and lodging
information can be found at the conference site listed above. Early bird registration
is in place until January 18th. Questions about the ride can be directed to
Nancy Smith (nancys@palsnet.info, x4466) or Sandy Ringstrom (sandyr@palsnet.info,
x2710).
SirsiDynix SuperConference: April 5-8, 2008 is the annual
user conference of SirsiDynix Unicorn users in Detroit, Michigan. The SirsiDynix
Institute's Executive Conference will be held concurrently on April 5-6. Registration
is now open at: http://www.superconference.info/ Early
bird registration is open through January 2008. PALS staff will be attending
the conference and are offering rides to any interested members. Please contact
Paul Mills (paulm@palsnet.info or x2715), Len Lindquist (lenl@palsnet.info or x4472), Brian Smith (brians@palsnet.info or x2704) or Judy Hutchinson (judyh@palsnet.info or x3150) if you have questions about riding. Registration for the ride will
be up in CLeO shortly.

Communication
With Our Legislators
The
Congressional Management Foundation report “How
Capitol Hill is Coping with the Surge in Citizen Advocacy” as well as
plain old common sense suggest that personalized, thoughtful communications
are more effective in gaining the attention of elected officials than postcards,
petitions and form e-mails. You may want to save this link. Much useful information
there. Over the last two years, I’ve many times heard from our legislators
that a handwritten note will get more attention, is more likely to be read
and paid attention to by the officials than large quantities of mass produced
post cards and e-mails.
Here’s a request: Please send a thank you note
to Rep Mautino for introducing H.B.4518 – Libraries In Name Only. See
last week’s Prairie Views for more detail on the bill or go to ILA’s
web page to read more.
Representative Frank J. Mautino (D-IL 76th)
221
E St. Paul St
Spring Valley, IL 61362 (
815) 663-1629
Please also send a note,
or make a phone call, to your own legislators so they know our libraries are
interested in this bill and that we’d appreciate their support once it
gets called for a vote. It has not yet had a first reading and has a long way
to go but we should prepare our legislators and alert them to the bill’s
importance for us.
Valentine’s Day Advocacy Call to Action
(ALA, Washington) What's
it all about?
This Valentine’s
Day, have your teens, parents, children and library supporters flood federal
elected officials’ district offices with Valentines that express love
for your library and its staff and ask for support for important legislation.
The ALA Youth Divisions - AASL, ALSC and YALSA - are sending out a call to
action to library workers to have teens, children, parents and library supporters
in their community send “I Love My Teen Services Librarian” or “I
Love My School Librarian” Valentine cards to their U.S. Senators and
Representatives, and to ask their elected officials to co-sponsor the SKILLS
Act &/or support LSTA funding for libraries. Their voices are powerful
and need to be heard, and you can help them do that! Let the legislators know
you and your patrons support:
* The SKILLs Act, which guarantees that all students
in the U.S. will be served by state-certified library media specialists and
will have the resources they need to succeed.
* The Library Services Technology
Act (LSTA), which can help libraries of all kinds expand services and access
to information resources for people of all ages.
How can you make this happen? Host
a program in your public or school library and invite teens, parents, children
and library supporters to make and sign “I Love My Librarian” valentines.
Make it a fun craft project for the whole family! You might also consider involving:
* Government or History teachers and ask them to integrate the Valentine card
campaign into the classroom activities.
* The library’s Teen Advisory
Group. They can help plan the event and think of other ways to encourage youth
in your community to get involved in the advocacy effort.
* The library’s
Friends group. Encourage them to send the advocacy call out to Friends members.
What to include on/in the valentine:
* The message in the valentine should
be simple: “I love my librarian and you should too!” Please sign
on as a cosponsor for the SKILLS Act (HR 2864 and S. 1699)” OR “I
love my librarian and you should too! Please support funding for libraries
through LSTA.”
* Have the individual provide their full name and
mailing address. Congressional staffers need this information in order to respond
to the individual and to track local interest in issues.
* Either ask participants
to bring their own stamps or provide the stamps yourself.
For longer letters
and messages:
o Make messages personal—have advocates state briefly why
the issue is important, how it affects them, and their community.
o Keep messages
focused, short and polite.
o Ask for their support on a specific issue such
as the SKILLS Act or LSTA Funding.
o Thank the official for their time.
o Address
the envelopes to "The Honorable (first name last name)
o Address the letter
to "Senator (last name)" or "Representative (last name)"
Mailing
the valentines &/or letters:
o Send letters and Valentine's Day cards to
your elected official's local district office. Complete contact information
is at www.capwiz.com/ala. Just enter your zip code. Mail sent to Washington
D.C. undergoes extensive security-related procedures that will delay its delivery
and change its physical appearance. Please send it to the local, not the DC
office!
o For the convenience of your patrons, look up the proper names and
addresses for your state’s Congress persons in advance and provide them
to the patrons at your event.
o Gather completed Valentines and letters and
put them in the nearest mail box.
